Courage & Understanding Help End Stigma‏ NAMI (auto-updates@nami.org)Schedule cleanup 2/12/14 Newsletters To: racheljanine@live.com Picture of NAMI Education & Understanding is How We End Stigma It takes courage to stand up and speak out. It takes even more when you are alone, when you are fighting for yourself or your children and are confronted by social stereotypes and negative attitudes. On CBS-TVs 60 Minutes segment "The Stigma of Raising a Mentally Ill Child," news anchor Scott Pelley shared about the individuals who were interviewed, “Imagine being a parent appearing on 60 Minutes to talk about the serious mental illness of your child…very hard to do.” Or take Stephanie Escamilla, a NAMI member from San Antonio, who shared her experience with her son “Daniel” with NAMI, who then brought it to CNN. By telling her story in a safe and supported way, she helped pave the way for a more compassionate understanding of those who are affected by mental illness. Everyone talks about the stigma attached to mental illness, it's real, it's really real Every day NAMI promotes common-sense solutions. NAMI amplifies the stories of families and individuals and ensures media reporting is compassionate and accurate in portrayals of mental illness. Through stories like these, NAMI helps shape the way America understands mental illness. By being the voice for millions of individuals and families affected by mental illness, NAMI offers help and hope to those in need.
