Is coffee good or bad?

Coffee as an Antidepressant: Its Pros and Cons

Adapted from Dr. Judith Orloff’s New York Times Bestseller, “Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself From Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life” (Three Rivers Press, 2011)

In America, we consume over 400 million cups of coffee every day. Ever wonder why so many of us make such a lustful beeline for our caffeine? Could it be the oodles of antioxidants it contains? Or that science has revealed its health benefits, including lowered risk of diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, gallstones, and colon cancer? I don’t think that even these unquestionable virtues are what make coffee the highlight of your day. Then what does? The mood and energy-enhancing effects of caffeine. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and acts as an antidepressant by elevating serotonin and dopamine--it’s even been shown in the Archives of Internal Medicine to lower suicide rates. Some experience the mood boost more than others. Unknowingly, many people self-medicate depression with caffeine. How to know if you’re doing this versus just getting a beneficial pick-me-up? Some tip-offs: You consume more than four caffeinated beverages daily, including teas and diet sodas. Or you keep increasing your caffeine intake to feel less depressed, but it’s losing its effectiveness. I’m all for making the most of coffee’s therapeutic perks to allay low-level depression, but sometimes you may need other approaches when this emotion still persists. To find out if you’re self-medicating depression, you can stop your caffeine intake. After a month (most withdrawal symptoms, which include headache and fatigue, will be over by then) notice if you’re notably more depressed without caffeine, not always an easy experiment. Should you discover that you are self-medicating, also consider the numerous therapies discussed in this chapter to augment coffee, or to replace it. However, mild depressions can respond well to simply drinking up to three cups daily. (Try spacing them out; caffeine remains in the system four to six hours). More than this increases side effects and raises the chances of tolerance and addiction: You consume greater quantities but don’t get the lift. Always consider caffeine’s pluses and minuses. Reduce your intake if you have insomnia, heartburn, palpitations, headaches, or nervousness. Moreover, if you’re being treated for heart disease, hypertension, gastrointestinal problems, or other chronic illnesses, consult your physician before you ingest caffeine in any form.

Acupuncture As A Remedy for Back Pain

by: David A Griffiths

If you suffer from back pain you probably would not consider acupuncture as a treatment until you have exhausted many other alternatives. However, acupuncture is a type of ancient Chinese medicine that's been around for over 2,500 years and throughout this time it has been used for back pain relief, increasingly so in these modern times.

While it is not traditionally a part of western medicine, nowadays your doctor is quite likely to send you for this treatment if you are suffering from back or neck pain either persistantly or due to accident or injury.

If you are going to have this therapy you may want to know a little about how it works. The general belief is that the body has 20 energy flow patterns called meridians or pathways. Through these pathways it is thought that the life force or vital energy flows, this is known as the qi (it is pronounced chee) and is considered to be essential to maintain good health. There are over 2,000 points on our bodies that connect with these pathways and it is at these points which the hair-thin needles are inserted, this is done in varying specific combinations depending on the treatment required. These actions are believed to either correct the flow of qi or to reinforce it.

Even though it cannot be proven that this works as a type of pain relief, it is thought that as a result the central nervous system is stimulated. Most patients say that they get a pins and needles sensation on the insertion of the needles and indeed into the duration of the treatment, which usually lasts about 15 to 30 minutes. Some people report that they feel energised or even very relaxed so it appears as if the effect can be is somewhat different depending on the individual.

The acupuncturist will use up to 20 metallic needles during a treatment session and the depth they are inserted is dependent upon the area, deeper muscular or fatty areas need more penetration and the scalp for example would be just below the surface. The practitioner may turn the needles one way or another depending on what they are trying to achieve, in my personal experience they were turned on insertion, then again about half way through the treatment. At no point is the treatment painful, there is a mere sensation of the needles going in and they do not feel sharp at all, this is because unlike needles used for injections, an acupuncture needle’s tip come to a smooth point without sharp edges. They are also very thin, about 20 times thinner than a hypodermic needle. In my experience the most troublesome part of the treatment is lying in the same position without moving for up to 30 minutes, especially if you suffer from back pain or similar.

Although there are many medical experts who believe acupuncture is an effective way to treat certain conditions such as back pain, there is no true consensus. Some adhere to the theories of qi and meridians whilst others attribute acupunctures’ benefits to the biological changes that are brought about in the body as a result of treatment. Needless to say there will always be the sceptics who deny that acupuncture has any effect at all, but in my opinion if you are suffering from ongoing back pain it is certainly worth trying.

The Psalms

Psalm 91: A Safer Harbor

by: Jeanie Rose

Why so many references these days to Psalm 91? Presently, most folks are looking for a safer harbor. Security and even the illusion of security has disappeared when you assess the world's systems we had so much confidence in five or ten years ago.

More and more, people of faith are going back to cultivate their roots, digging deeper with prayer and study. When the seen world shakes, it makes sense to turn to the unseen world for stability. It makes sense for a believer to get a firmer grip on the spiritual treasures of his or her faith base.

Take a look at this treasure. Psalm 91:1 reads: He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty (NKJ). Psalm 91 is a treasure chest to be carefully unpacked. Take a close look at what is offered in Psalm 91 and you begin to feel overwhelmed.

What, protection from every sort of dangerous and destructive circumstance? Wow! You think, "This is just too good!" Yes, it is that good! But, back up. These blessings are not free for the taking. Have a look at how to qualify.

Qualifying Conditions: Psalm 91:1 gives you the first step in obtaining the following promises. This requirement is to dwell in the Secret Place, to abide up under the Shadow of the Almighty.

Dwell and abide are the contemporary translations for the Hebrew word yada. When you check the meanings of yada in the Old Testament, notice that the word is indicating a deeply personal sort of knowing. Good example: Adam knew Eve and they produced a child. Yada-ing is an intimate and fruitful relationship. Now you see the first conditional requirement to experience the amazing promises of Psalm 91: develop a yada relationship with God, an intensely personal relationship that produces spiritual life. This is very similar to marriage. Here is a life of focused commitment.

Abiding (yada-ing) up under the shadow of the Almighty is a step to be taken, a life's priority and a focus to be maintained. Abiding is not something you can check off the list as "finished". This abiding is on-going and defines your life.

Defines your life! Is there any question why so few people of faith ever personally experience the promises of Psalm 91? But, that does not have to be you.

Some Action Steps for Qualifying: Abiding under the Shadow of the Almighty is a lifetime pursuit. Here are some strategies for pressing into the Secret Place. Read through to get some ideas. Then, go with what seems to speak to you from this page. Stay flexible. What works for you this week may not work next week. Be ready to try a new strategy or a combination of strategies. Stick with it. The effect is cumulative as you will discover. Here are some suggestions:

 Develop a mindset of thanksgiving. Be thankful in all things. In doing this, you will be seeing the Lord as central to all that happens in your life. And of course, He is!

 Spend time seeking the Lord. God is not hiding. Come close to Him and He will draw close to you. Cry out to the Lord and He will answer you. Cultivate the ability to hear Him, because He does answer. Find a mentor to help with this if you have difficulty hearing God speak.

 Set aside time each day to be silent before the Lord in prayer. You can find extensive tutorials online for doing this.

 Watch your self-talk. As you spend more time in the Secret Place, your self-talk will reflect it. Check to see what of your present self-talk is disagrees with what God is saying. Locate those thoughts and replace them with truth that comes from Scripture. You will need to do some research to find the appropriate Scriptures to use. Some effort, but well worth it!

 Bless the time and the atmosphere by playing low volume worship music through the night. Choose music that causes your spirit to be caught up in prayer and worship during waking hours. This is one way to know there is an anointing present. While your body rests, your spirit is soaring in worship. What an economy of time! Also, you know from Scripture that God inhabits (sets His throne on) the praises of His people. So it appears that the Lord is present in some special way when worship is occurring.

 Play recorded Scripture prayer when your hands are busy but your mind is idle. Take this opportunity to memorize Scripture, to proclaim it in prayer, to change the atmosphere around you as you release the living Word of God. Your mind is being renewed, causing you to think like God thinks. Yes, think like God thinks!

In Summary: Brief and to the point: Psalm 91:1 is an invitation to not only dwell with the Lord, but to draw up closely to His heart and develop a mutual life, a life lived together. Like marriage, this relationship requires an investment of time and focus. Like any good marriage, the effort is so worth it. No matter where you find yourself on the continuum of intimacy with the Lord, there is always room for improvement. There is no end to the depths of God. So cultivate carefully and water those roots. Get started today to be fully qualified for the blessings of Psalm 91.

If you are the type of person to constantly tell yourself that you have a problem with "this" and a problem with "that" then you need to turn all of your problems into goals. Instead of making your overweight problem a problem turn it into a goal. Instead of saying you weigh 50 pounds overweight say that by the end of 90 days you plan to lose 50 pounds. Make it your business to make that transformation in your head, and once you do you will be one step closer to figuring out how to be happy. Also, there is a huge decrease in the level of stress a person has when your problem vanishes into a goal. Furthermore, It helps with a person's overall happiness.

Problems can cause anxiety, stress, tension, and a myriad of other unhealthy issues. They also drain a large portion of a person's energy when he has to be focused on solving that issue. Rather than trying to solve an issue, if a person changes that issue into a goal it automatically promotes activity and is usually very energizing and motivating. A valuable goal creates enthusiasm which in turn creates happiness. Moreover, when you picture yourself completing that goal you will be able to feel an incredible amount of joy which you will eventually feel in the future when you actually complete it. For that moment in the present you are experiencing something more surreal even though you didn't complete any goals. All you did was take the step forward to try and achieve happiness.

Your goals may sometimes be just for the sake of getting rid of a particular problem or issue but they should always have the same outcome in mind. The outcome of changing a problem into a goal will make you accomplish more and will make you feel more alive and energetic. You will feel that you have something to work for, something to look forward to, as opposed to just waiting for something to happen. All of these things that you once thought were problems can become solutions. Once you have a solution your stress level goes down and your happiness level increases tenfold. The pattern of life of having a problem and a solution is the most beneficial thing to learn how to do properly.

If you were searching for how to be happy then the first place to start would be by turning your problems into goals.

Health Benefits Of Pineapple

Public by Similan Tiga on cateogry Nutrition views 0 words 757.

This sticky and sweet tropical fruit is a favourite with children of all ages. Perfect as an integral part of sweet and sour sauce, you cant go past the wonderful pineapple. Pineapple is a tropical fruit, it contains a proteolytic enzyme bromelain, which helps in the digestion of protein. Pineapple can prevent blood clot formation because of its bromelain content.

Pineapples are a member of the Bromeliaceae family and are composed of many flowers whose fruitlets are fused around a core. Each fruitlet has an eye which is the spiny part on the pineapples surface. Pineapples are both sweet and tart with a beautiful, tropical yellow colour, reminiscent of warm summer days at the beach.

Health Benefits of Pineapple

One of the most important enzymes in pineapple is bromelain and it is bromelain that holds the key to many of the pineapples health benefits. Fresh pineapple is full of these sulphur-containing, protein-digesting compounds so, what can they do for you?

Bromelain and Pineapples

Bromelain has been found to be a useful anti-inflammatory, effective in reducing swelling and assisting in the treatment of conditions such as acute sinusitis, sore throat, arthritis and gout. For increased effectiveness, pineapple should be eaten between meals without other food. This is because of another of bromelaids properties, that as an aid to digestion. If eaten with other food, bromelaids health benefits will be taken up in helping to digest the other food.

Pineapple is high in anti-oxidants

A very good source of vitamin C, pineapple offers your body an excellent protection against free-radicals, substances that attack healthy cells. A build up of free-radicals can lead to atherosclerosis and diabetic heart disease, an increase in asthma attacks and an increased risk of developing certain cancers, such as colon cancer. Free-radicals have also been shown to accentuate the problems associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Vitamin C, your bodys most important water-soluble anti-oxidant has proven itself invaluable in fighting against and aiding treatment for these conditions.

Vitamin C is, of course, also an excellent cold and flu fighter due to its importance to the proper functioning of the immune system.

Manganese

Pineapple is also an excellent source of manganese, a mineral essential in some of the enzymes necessary in the body for energy production. It also has very good amounts of thiamine (vitamin B1) which is also important in these energy producing enzymes.

Macular degeneration

Pineapple and other fruit has been shown to be important in maintaining good eye health, helping to protect against age-related eye problems. Three serves of fruit a day, in particular those high in anti-oxidants, has been shown to lower your risk of developing this potentially debilitating condition.

Pineapple Stems

There are even some beneficial molecules hidden in the stems of pineapples, Australian research has found. These molecules have been seen to act as a defence against certain types of cancer. The types of cancer benefited by these molecules are ovarian, breast, lung, colon and skin cancer.

Pineapple Nutritive Value (Per 100 gm.)

* Vitamin A: 130 I.U.

* Vitamin C: 24 mg

* Calcium: 16 mg

* Phosphorus: 11 mg

* Potassium: 150 mg

* Carbohydrates: 13.7 gm

* Calories: 52

Pineapple Benefits

Pineapple has following health benefits

1. It is regulates the gland and found to be helpful in cases of goiter(enlargement of the thyroid gland).

2. Dyspepsia (chronic digestive disturbance).

3. Bronchitis (inflammation of the bronchial tubes.)

4. Catarrh (secretions from mucous membranes).

5. High Blood pressure.

6. Arthritis (diseases of the joints)

7. Fresh pineapple juice is also used in removing intestinal worms.

8. Fresh pineapple juice has been used to combat diptheria and other infections of the throat or other parts of the body.

9. Prevents nausea (includes morning sickness and motion sickness), Take 230 cc. of pineapple juice or papaya juice.

10. Constipation

Selecting & Storing Pineapple

Pineapples should feel heavy for their size, otherwise they could end up dry and tasteless. They should look, feel and smell clean and have no bad or mouldy marks on the outer surface. As pineapple stops ripening when picked, choose carefully and dont select one that looks immature. Pineapples can be stored at room temperature however they spoil easily and should be watched carefully. To keep it longer than a day or two, wrap in a plastic bag and store in the fridge for up to five days. If youve cut your pineapple, store unused pieces in the fridge in an airtight container and use as soon as possible. They can be frozen however this will change the flavour so be careful.
